The original inspiration to draw Mr. Peacock was the challenge of drawing all his feathers - especially the "eyes" surrounding him. It took around 10 crayons just to get the right colors and shading for one of those eyes. If you are wondering how all those feathers were completed in the background, I will tell you... Remember when you were a child and your teacher had you color a bunch of colors on a piece of paper, and then ask you to go over all those colors completely with a black crayon? This is exactly what I did. After the colors were put on, and the black color was colored over them, I took a sharp metal point and started scratching away the black to make the feathers. It would have been difficult to have achieved the fine detail of the lines of the feathers otherwise. And lastly, the secret to his shiny blue feathers is that I used metallic blues to make him shimmer. They were put on last.
